Before you give

Municipal campaign contributions in Ontario come with rules, and most people have had no reason to learn them. In short:

• Only individuals who live in Ontario may contribute. Corporations and trade unions may not.
• The maximum is $1,200 to a single candidate, and $5,000 in total across all candidates for Stratford City Council.
• Contributions over $25 cannot be made in cash.
• Anyone who gives more than $100 is named in the campaign's financial statement, which is a public document.
• Municipal contributions are not tax deductible and do not generate a charitable receipt.
